After seeing nearly 60,000 dogs get on heartworm preventives for the first time during its Heartworm 2020 challenge, Boehringer Ingelheim is teaming up with veterinary teams to fight roundworms and hookworms, too.
A new initiative, Worm Wars, challenges veterinary clinics to start 20 new dogs on heartworm preventives or 20 lapsed dogs back on prevention during each month in 2020. Heartworm 2020 led to 58,800 previously unprotected dogs receiving medication formulated to prevent heartworm disease.
“Heartworm 2020 achieved the goal of getting more unprotected dogs on prevention by arming clinics with new educational tools to talk about heartworm disease with dog owners,” said Max Bernstein, Boehringer Ingelheim’s marketing manager for Heartgard Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel). “As we looked at how to leverage that momentum this year, we knew we needed to expand the conversation to talk about important intestinal parasite threats and also address compliance.”
Heartgard Plus is formulated to kill developing heartworm larvae and to treat and control roundworms and hookworms.
Clinics that log in at HeartgardClinic.com and then download and submit Worm Wars tracking sheets will be eligible to win prizes. Also available are client handouts explaining the danger and prevention of intestinal parasites.
