Pet and People Emotions
6 Years
Over the last six years, the number of anxiety-related claims among Trupanion-covered dogs and cats across the U.S. has increased by 93%, according to the pet insurer. And in some states, it’s even higher. In the last year alone, Trupanion received more than 25,000 anxiety-related claims. Trupanion provides medical insurance for cats and dogs throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia with over 1 million pets currently enrolled, the company stated.
56%
More than half (56%) of pet owners say the fear of being a “bad pet parent” has directly impacted their travel decisions, while 61% admit they worry more about their pet’s well-being than their own enjoyment while on vacation. The national survey, commissioned by pet-sitting platform TrustedHousesitters, further reveals that separation anxiety isn’t exclusive to pets – nearly half (49%) of pet owners say they experience separation anxiety when away from their pets.
1 in 10
About 1 in 10 (11%) of respondents to the TrustedHousesitters national survey admitted they’ve declined a travel opportunity they really wanted just because they didn’t want to leave their pet.
150% increase in anxiety-related health claims
Trupanion data analysts found that anxiety-related health claims have increased by as much as 150% in some states since 2019. Louisiana (+150%), Washington (+149%), and North Carolina (+129%) had the most significant increase in claims. In all, six states and Washington D.C., experienced a 100% or more increase in anxiety-related claims.
