New vaccine protects poultry from three infectious diseases
Veterinarians and poultry producers now have an easier way to protect their flocks against three serious diseases.
Boehringer Ingelheim announced January 6 that its U.S. animal health business has launched a vaccine that can protect poultry from Marek’s Disease, infectious bursal disease and Newcastle disease.
The pharmaceutical manufacturer until now has had two vaccines to protect against the infections, but those vaccines don’t work against all three diseases and can’t be used together.
“Disease prevention through vaccination is key to ensure better bird health, resulting in bird performance and safety,” said Nikki Pritchard, global head of poultry vaccines research and development at the company. “This is critical in supporting our customers’ ability to produce affordable protein to feed the planet.”
Boehringer Ingelheim will manufacture the new vaccine at its Gainesville, Georgia, facility. While the drug is currently available for U.S. customers, officials are seeking regulatory approval in several countries so customers outside the United States can access it.
“Vaxxitek HVT+IBD+ND provides producers the flexibility and expected protection against three diseases with one product,” said Matt Nelson, head of Boehringer Ingelheim’s U.S. poultry business. “We’re confident this vaccine will improve flock health and live production performance our customers have come to expect from the Vaxxitek brand.”
