Butterfly and MWI partner on point-of-care ultrasound
Point-of-care ultrasound developer Butterfly Network recently announced a new partnership with MWI Animal Health, through which MWI will warehouse and sell the portable, whole-body ultrasound device.
The device, called iQ Vet, uses chip technology paired with a smartphone app, unlike traditional ultrasounds that use a more expensive technology called piezoelectric crystals. This means Butterfly’s device is far less expensive than traditional ultrasound machines—about $2,000 for the device plus $420 for a one-year app subscription, versus upwards of $20,000 for a traditional machine—and the company says it’s easier to use for any animal.
“This is an exciting moment for us at Butterfly, as we seek to democratize medical imaging and expand our footprint in the animal health space with our groundbreaking solution, iQ Vet,” said Darius Shahida, Butterfly Network’s chief strategy and business development officer. “MWI Animal Health’s strong relationships with veterinary practices nationwide makes them the perfect partner to help us realize this vision even faster.”
