Chewy’s veterinary clinics are a strategic play for dominance
With Chewy’s expansion into veterinary clinics, the company is not just diversifying — it’s aiming to redefine its role in the $40 billion U.S. veterinary market. The company’s core business– pet food and supplies – has long relied on recurring revenue and strong brand loyalty. But the veterinary market is highly fragmented (the top five players control less than 15% of the market), and it offers a new frontier.

Hundreds of veterinary professionals were scheduled to meet with U.S. lawmakers in Washington, D.C., on July 17 to advocate for passage of the American Veterinary Medical Association-backed Combating Illicit Xylazine Act, which would help address the emerging threat of illicit xylazine while preserving veterinary access to the animal sedative.

However, half (51%) agred that they “like having the option of a telemedicine consultation with a veterinarian when an onsite vet visit might not be necessary.”

Dogs, cats and ferrets from out-of-state rescues must have a rabies vaccine before being imported into Colorado. Local daycares, boarding facilities and groomers must have a record of current vaccines for rabies, distemper, parvovirus and FVRCP (for cats).
Cell therapy on cats with FIP may advance solutions for Long COVID
Research from the University of California-Davis supports the idea that feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) could be a useful model for studying long-term immune problems following a viral infection in animals and humans. Researchers believe mesenchymal stromal cells, or MSC therapy, in combination with antiviral drugs might reduce short-term inflammation and help bring the immune system into lasting balance.
New Texas law requires vet clinics to register with the state
Texas Senate Bill 2155 will require all facilities where veterinary medicine is practiced to register with the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. The measure will also give the TBVME the authority to issue an emergency order to suspend or revoke a veterinary professional’s license or temporarily shut down an unsafe veterinary medical facility, if the TVME determines that the public’s health and safety are at risk. Another bill will allocate $500,000 to expand the TBVME’s electronic database of complaints, inspections and enforcement action against veterinary licensees.
