CAPC study quantifies relationship between incidences of human Lyme disease and tick exposure in dogs
New research from the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) confirms dogs are sentinels to assess human risk for tick-borne Lyme disease, according to a release. Results from the study — “Quantifying the relationship between human Lyme disease and Borrelia burgdorferi exposure in domestic dogs” — were published last week in peer-reviewed Geospatial Health. “This research shows how man’s best friend continues to safeguard humans as a sentinel to alert humans where they are at greatest risk for Lyme disease,” said Christopher Carpenter, DVM and executive director of CAPC. “The model established in this research breaks new ground to give residents, travelers and health care providers a county-level map to help them identify areas of risk across the country.” The study quantifies the association between canine seroprevalence for the disease-causing bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, and human incidence of Lyme disease, the most prevalent tick-borne disease in the U.S. Seroprevalence is calculated as the proportion of dogs that test positive among all tested dogs within a county. The overall association shows that human incidence increases as dog seroprevalence increases.

Gene therapy for dogs finding success
According to Denver, Colorado-based CBS4, veterinarians are conducting a gene study only on Colorado dogs, and so far they are finding a 100% success rate. Dogs are getting a new lease on life after just one injection, the report said. The shot is made up of the Interleukin 10 gene, which the body naturally produces. Dr. Rob Landry is the only veterinarian in the United States administering this therapy. He owns Colorado Animal Pain Center in Northglenn and tells CBS4’s Britt Moreno “the FDA and animal drug companies like to see higher population of patients.” That’s why he is searching for even more dogs with severe pain to participate in the study.
