USDA seeks public comment on climate-smart agriculture
USDA is requesting public comment on a climate-smart agriculture and forestry strategy, following a directive from an executive order signed in January by President Joe Biden.
The notice in the Federal Register seeks information on four topics: climate-smart agriculture and forestry; biofuels, bioproducts and renewable energy; catastrophic wildfire; and meeting the needs of disadvantaged communities through USDA’s climate strategy.
“We want your ideas on how to position the agriculture and forestry sectors to be leaders on climate-smart practices to mitigate climate change,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “This includes making the most of USDA programs, developing new USDA-led climate strategies, strengthening existing markets and developing new markets that generate income.”
Public comment can be submitted online through April 30.
Senate discusses carbon markets
A recent discussion in the Senate Agriculture Committee focused on climate change, particularly carbon markets. Despite the promises these markets hold for some farmers, they could cause challenges for others, stakeholders said.
Among other things, they said programs should be voluntary and offer flexibility depending on farm size and specialty. They said programs should be designed on outreach to local farmers, and they should offer benefits for those who are already practicing climate-smart agriculture.
