Veterinarians and pet owners can learn about regenerative medicine with new FDA tool

The FDA is launching an online resource for veterinarians and pet owners to get involved in the growing field of regenerative medicine.

Regenerative medicine is a rapidly growing area of product development that offers promise for new therapies for animals, according to the agency. These products, which include animal cell-based therapies such as stem cells, can potentially repair diseased or damaged tissues in animals through regeneration and healing.

The FDA has released a list of clinical field studies, to be updated quarterly, that are investigating animal cells, tissues, and cell- and tissue-based products (ACTPs) in veterinary patients.

“We are offering this webpage as a resource because we’ve heard from veterinarians and pet owners who are eager to take part in clinical studies and avail their patients and pets of the potential that veterinary regenerative medicine may offer,” the FDA said. “Connecting interested pet owners and their veterinary teams with relevant clinical studies also helps sponsors in generating data toward potential FDA approval.”

Clinical field study information on the webpage includes study name, species, condition, product type, recruitment period, study period, country or state, and contact information for the sponsor.

More information about the new resource, and regulators’ policies on ACTPs, is available from the FDA.
