These data confirm previous reports that juvenile dogs and cats have a higher incidence of fractures.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In each issue of <em>Today\u2019s Veterinary Practice<\/em>, <strong>Pet Health by the Numbers<\/strong> correlates article topics with statistics provided by Banfield Pet Hospital (banfield.com). These statistics are extracted from data collected from the medical records of nearly <strong>2.4 million dogs<\/strong> and <strong>480,000 cats<\/strong> presented to more than <strong>890 Banfield Pet Hospitals<\/strong> in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about data collection by reading <strong>Welcome to Pet Health by the Numbers<\/strong> (January\/February 2014 issue) and <strong>Key Findings from the <em>State of Pet Health 2014 Report<\/em><\/strong> (May\/June 2014 issue).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The following tables outline the prevalence of selected bone fractures in dogs and cats presented to Banfield Pet Hospitals in 2014. Fractures are discussed in <strong>A Practitioner\u2019s Guide to Fracture Management, Part 1: Diagnosing Fractures and Choosing a Fixation Technique<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/T1507C04_Table01.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5241 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/T1507C04_Table01.jpg\" alt=\"Table 1\" width=\"580\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/T1507C04_Table01.jpg 580w, https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/T1507C04_Table01-300x175.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/T1507C04_Table02.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5242 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/T1507C04_Table02.jpg\" alt=\"Table 2\" width=\"580\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/T1507C04_Table02.jpg 580w, https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/T1507C04_Table02-300x136.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Path to Pet Wellness<\/strong>:\u00a0In contrast to dogs at university referral hospitals,<sup>1<\/sup> the Banfield primary care data contains far fewer ilial category (also includes acetabular) fractures, suggesting that ilial and acetabular fractures may be underdiagnosed in general practice compared to appendicular fractures, or that (less likely) they are of low overall incidence but are more likely than appendicular fractures to be referred to specialists.<\/p>\n<p>Radial fractures in dogs are higher here than previously reported at university referral hospitals,<sup>1<\/sup> which suggests that an unexpectedly high number of toy dogs with radial fractures are treated by external coaptation (cast, splint) in local practices, and are, therefore, at risk for later nonunion.<\/p>\n<p>Prevalence of fractures in cats (femur fractures &gt; tibia &gt; radius &gt; humerus) shows a nearly 100% higher incidence of femur and 50% lower incidence of radial fractures compared with dogs. While etiology in these data is not reported, the distribution of fractures in cats presented here mirrors a previous report of cats with fractures from high-rise syndrome.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Further, more detailed evaluation of the Banfield database would be of great benefit to veterinary science.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A
