Path to Pet Wellness<\/span>:<\/strong> The prevalence of canine otitis externa reported in this dataset is similar to that reported in the literature (10.2%\u201413%),1,2<\/sup>\u00a0but the prevalence of feline otitis externa is higher than previously reported (2.3%, not including cats with\u00a0Otodectes cynotis<\/em>infestation).2<\/sup>\u00a0However, in one study focused on pets presented for dermatologic conditions, otitis externa was diagnosed in 22% of dogs and 19% of cats,3<\/sup>\u00a0suggesting that the actual prevalence\u00a0of otitis externa in primary care practice may be even higher than reported here (particularly for cats).<\/p>\n

This dataset supports\u00a0Otodectes cynotis<\/em>\u00a0infestation as an important cause of feline otitis. The prevalence of\u00a0Otodectes<\/em>\u00a0infestation may vary substantially by population, with higher prevalence (37%\u201453.3%) in stray cats.4,5<\/sup><\/p>\n

Otitis externa is a common manifestation of generalized dermatologic disease; otoscopic examinations and cytologic assessment of ear swabs should be performed routinely in dogs and cats, and workup for primary causes of inflammation should be undertaken in patients with recurrent otitis externa.<\/p>\n
