{"id":34965,"date":"2024-12-10T16:03:28","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T16:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/?p=34965"},"modified":"2025-05-27T18:14:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T18:14:11","slug":"communicate-clearly-dont-dumb-it-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/personal-professional-development\/communicate-clearly-dont-dumb-it-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Communicate Clearly, Don\u2019t \u201cDumb It Down\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ll just need a fecal sample for the next appointment to check for parasites.\u201d A girl-boss veterinarian colleague closed another successful wellness appointment! \u201cHuh?\u201d the client responded, confused. \u201cA stool sample to check for worms?\u201d Her confidence was fading. \u201cSome poop?\u201d my colleague replied. Silence. Puzzlement. \u201cS^*$ &#8230; can you bring some in?\u201d Nods, smiles, chuckles &#8230; She had finally broken through the confusion. The shock of using the curse word finally helped the client understand. The issue? My colleague hadn\u2019t followed the communication rule: to distill all our technical language down to the level of a 9-year-old child. Remember, we were told, \u201cAll medical records should be written at a second-grade level.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Did you know we speak a different language? Veterinary medicine is a dialect of \u201cbiology.\u201d After all, you understand this: \u201cI have a DSH that presented HBC with a prior history of CRF and now has signs consistent with ATE on IVF and a CRI for pain.\u201d The acronyms we are incredibly fond of help us communicate efficiently and clearly but definitely in our own way. When we move from colleague to client communication, we sometimes get in trouble. We forget to switch out of our veterinary dialect!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe has internal bleeding in his tummy.\u201d I watched another colleague attempt to communicate the urgent nature of a dog\u2019s medical condition. He had assumed, \u201cHe is hemorrhaging into his abdomen!\u201d was in our dialect. Instead of being met by the client\u2019s confusion, the combination of grief and stress ended in anger. \u201cI know what abdomen means!\u201d the client shouted as they left the room. Later they reported to the receptionist that the veterinarian had been condescending and treated them like a child. How can we ever win? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If \u201cdumbing it down\u201d makes people angry and \u201cYour GSD has VPCs and evidence of HCM\u201d is too technical, we have to land in the middle. And yes, the middle is a pretty wide range of language, communication styles, and phrasing. Using my acute 20\/20 hindsight, what stands out to me in both of these stories is the veterinarians weren\u2019t really communicating\u2014they made statements or gave lectures. Communication is back and forth; it involves questions, answers, listening, and adjustments. When a client says in words or expressions that they don\u2019t understand, sometimes the simple act of asking them another question regarding what they do understand and then carefully listening without responding will bring about understanding. \u201cWhy do we have to repeat x-rays in 2 weeks after all these medicat &#8230; Oh gosh, they hopefully will look totally different, right?\u201d I nod and smile. The client answered her own question. My job was done.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a secret
