{"id":25989,"date":"2021-10-08T18:58:25","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T18:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/?p=24538"},"modified":"2022-03-30T19:31:21","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T19:31:21","slug":"blockchain-technology-and-the-future-of-veterinary-credentials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/technology\/blockchain-technology-and-the-future-of-veterinary-credentials\/","title":{"rendered":"Blockchain Technology and the Future of Veterinary Credentials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Many hospitals are facing a sheer volume of patients and workload but are struggling to find veterinary professionals with the necessary skills to service that\u00a0demand.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This talent shortage presents 2 opportunities for better credentialing in the veterinary industry. One is simplifying how credentials are stored and shared, especially now that eLearning and competency-based training is becoming established. Another focuses on programs themselves, which comes down to finding ways to capture competencies that are meaningful or valuable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe veterinarian and veterinary technician shortage is a real thing. We\u2019re trying to solve how you find vets or veterinary technicians with appropriate skills to work. How do you ensure all the paperwork, diplomas, and credit hours are transferred in? How do you ensure they\u2019re licensed in the state?\u201d says Dr. Jason Johnson, global chief medical officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idexx.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDEXX<\/a> and co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lmunet.edu\/college-of-veterinary-medicine\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine<\/a>. \u201cThe whole movement now is to think about education as a movement away from credit hours to skills and competencies, to abilities and achievements. It\u2019s what the learner of today wants and future employers are looking for\u2014that\u2019s how we begin solving for a more relevant and ready veterinary workforce.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For example, the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aavmc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AAVMC<\/a>) has been working toward a competency-based model since 2015. It has built 32\u00a0competencies, with a broader vision of creating an amalgam of in-house academic learning and private practice. An essential part of this endeavor is finding how to store these learning records in a trustworthy <\/span>way that\u2019s accessible to everyone who needs to see them<span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\">The Holy Grail: A Single Source of Truth for Credentials<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Consider what happens when a veterinarian or veterinary<span class=\"s1\"> nurse\/technician is applying for a job or going back to school for a new degree. To send their certified transcript or degree to their prospective employer or school, they have to contact their old school, ask the registrar to send the sealed documents, then forward them along. This process can take 4 to 6\u00a0weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The natural question is how to digitize this process to build a single foundation for storing and sharing all official diplomas, credit hours, competencies, and licensing in a way that meets everyone\u2019s needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Ideally, this digital ledger would have a few key characteristics, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p4\"><b>Verifiable:<\/b> establishing a single source of truth<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><b>Auditable:<\/b> everyone involved is able to track changes<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><b>Secure:<\/b> no way to create fraudulent documents without leaving a digital record<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><b>Decentralized:<\/b> no single intermediary controls the data<\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\"><b>Learner-managed:<\/b> learners control what data they share, without compromising trust<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It turns out these are the same traits needed for cryptocurrency, which relies on blockchain technology as its means for securing and transferring ownership of currency units. Blockchain emerged as a solution for transacting cryptocurrency in a transparent and verifiable way, but it is a generic technology that can be used for many applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe value is being part of a network that gives a single source of truth, that shares credentials and gives an auditable trail of where they came from and who issued them,\u201d says Dr. Patrick Welch, founder and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/vetbloom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VetBloom<\/a>, a provider of CE courses. \u201cThe technology that allows this happens to be blockchain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\">How Blockchain Works<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Blockchain is a type of database that records and tracks providence of a digital asset or credential. It functions by storing the data in blocks that share a small bit of data with previous blocks, hence the name. This design inhibits anyone from changing a link, because each link shares data with neighboring links.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIf you look at blockchain itself, not all data is stored in the chain. What\u2019s stored on the chain are encrypted pointers to the details. There\u2019s an off-chain repository where the data is stored,\u201d Dr. Welch says. \u201cAs you put data into the blockchain, you\u2019re sharing a bit of data, called a hash, to blocks on the chain to allow users to access that information.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What this means is universities, employers, and other parties have access to a distributed database where everyone can enter data and track who entered it and when in a secure way that can\u2019t be tampered with. It <\/span>could be more practical to manage a blockchain database<span class=\"s1\"> than a centralized database that a single entity owns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIf you think of blockchain as a utility, you\u2019re able to capture and build competencies that are more relevant, and a more relevant worker who could continue to upskill,\u201d says Dr. Johnson. \u201cWhat we\u2019re suggesting is that all those competencies and skills are valuable, especially if co-developed and relevant for today\u2019s workforce. Employers, boards, licensures, academic institutions, CE providers\u2014they can all create relevant credentialing. The learner owns it, but this is a visible way to share all those valuable competencies and skills in an accessible, ecosystem approach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\">Cryptic Roots, Credible Future<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Most of the attention on blockchain centers on <\/span>cryptocurrency, but IBM is working on creating a credible <span class=\"s1\">blockchain foundation for business. It has built blockchains for shipping container tracking, perishable goods tracking with its IBM Food Trust network, and now for learning credentials with the Learning <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Credential Network (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/blockchain\/solutions\/learning-credentials\">LCN<\/a>), which is a global blockchain<\/span><span class=\"s1\">-based platform for education in all industries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Welch saw the potential of blockchains for veterinary credentials and reached out to discuss with IBM, a leader in enterprise blockchain. \u201cIBM happened to be working on LCN at the time, so we were able to get in with IBM early on by bringing together an alliance of veterinary industry stakeholders to build this out for veterinary credentials,\u201d Dr.\u00a0Welch says. \u201cLCN is based on IBM\u2019s underlying technology, but the goal is to create a new organization to manage the LCN.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">VetBloom is creating integrations with the LCN as part of the pilot, along with an ecosystem of stakeholders representing different aspects of the veterinary profession. LCN is built on an open framework, so anyone who wants to integrate with it\u2014whether for building a learning platform to issue credentials or building a wallet for individuals to house credentials\u2014can do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIf a university wants to issue degrees of transcripts, they can do so using the issuer application,\u201d says Dr. Welch. \u201cIf you want a bundled solution, our goal is to provide all the tools you need. If you\u2019re a bigger organization and want to create your own issuer application, we give you the APIs (application programming interfaces) to do that. We\u2019re working on the pilot right now to move things forward, and our goal is to put this into play for limited-use cases next year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\">Where It&#8217;s Going Next<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe roadblocks to widespread blockchain usage aren\u2019t the technology. They center on building an ecosystem of universities, employers, and licensing agencies and creating a self-sustaining economic model,\u201d says Dr. Welch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is the educational currency of the future. It\u2019s up to groups to come together to package things that are valuable, like a mixture of 10 online hours and 150 other micro-skills or competencies, or a CE event, then wrap a credential around that,\u201d says Dr. Johnson. \u201cThe blockchain allows conserving this digital learning record in a way that\u2019s secure, learner-centered, and trusted. That\u2019s where I see veterinary credentials evolving over the next few years and how blockchain could fit in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs an industry, this project allows us to be a leader relative to other health professions with regard to blockchain and learning credentials,\u201d says Dr. Welch. \u201cThis is a tremendously exciting opportunity.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-box su-box-style-default\" id=\"\" style=\"border-color:#003d45;border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-box-title\" style=\"background-color:#007078;color:#ffffff;border-top-left-radius:1px;border-top-right-radius:1px\">Other Blockchain Use Cases for the Veterinary Industry<\/div><div class=\"su-box-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"border-bottom-left-radius:1px;border-bottom-right-radius:1px\">Apart from credentials, there are other cases such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Supply chain: blockchain can track drugs to provide visibility and transparency about where they come from, which could help prevent counterfeits<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Electronic medical records: blockchain allows patients to control and share records, which is already happening in human medicine<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Research in genomics: blockchain allows the sharing and storing of patient information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Blockchain applications are already happening on the human medical side, and there\u2019s a huge opportunity to move in this direction for veterinary
