{"id":20313,"date":"2020-02-28T19:15:40","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T19:15:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/?p=20313"},"modified":"2022-02-18T21:01:23","modified_gmt":"2022-02-18T21:01:23","slug":"vca-stops-elective-declaw-surgeries-nationwide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/news\/vca-stops-elective-declaw-surgeries-nationwide\/","title":{"rendered":"VCA Stops Elective Declaw Surgeries Nationwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Elective declaw surgery is now banned at all 875 VCA Animal Hospitals across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The policy change, which went into effect this month, follows similar moves at 1,050 Banfield Pet Hospitals and 80\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/better-together-fund-helps-stricken-associates\/\">BluePearl<\/a>\u00a0practices. All three companies are owned by Mars Inc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Mars Veterinary Health, we believe every pet deserves a safe, loving and supportive home that enables appropriate expression of natural behaviors,\u201d said Jennifer Welser, DVM, DACVO, the chief medical and quality officer with Mars Veterinary Health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter careful consideration, medical leadership aligned on a new declaw position, and elective declaw surgery is no longer offered at U.S. Mars Veterinary Health practices \u2014 including VCA, Banfield and BluePearl \u2014 unless determined to be medically necessary,\u201d Dr. Welser said.<\/p>\n<p>Banfield, which operates veterinary hospitals in the United States and Puerto Rico, released a position statement that urges its employees to \u201ceducate and encourage owners on alternatives to declaw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Banfield veterinarians can perform onychectomies they deem medically necessary \u201cas part of a comprehensive treatment plan to relieve pet pain or illness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the \u2026 criterion is met \u2026 the providing medical team shall review the surgical procedure with the owner, including outlining all possible complications and post-operative care,\u201d the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p>Mars Veterinary Health did not report how many elective declaws had been performed at the three companies.<\/p>\n<p>VCA\u2019s 115 Canadian hospitals stopped doing elective declaws in May 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe surveyed our veterinarians and they were massively in support of a declaw ban,\u201d Danny Joffe, DVM, DABVP (Canine\/Feline), VCA Canada\u2019s national medical director for general practices, told Today\u2019s Veterinary Business in an April 2019 article.<\/p>\n<p>Government-mandated declaw bans are slowly spreading.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/poll-should-the-u-s-ban-cat-declawing\/\">New York State<\/a>\u00a0outlawed the surgery in 2019, and Michigan could become the second such state if a bill introduced Feb. 19 becomes law. Cities such as Denver, Los Angeles and San Francisco already bar declaw surgery.<\/p>\n<p>The American Veterinary Medical Association revised its feline\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/avma-formally-discourages-declawing-of-cats\/\">declaw policy<\/a>\u00a0in January, discouraging onychectomies as an elective procedure and supporting non-surgical alternatives.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Did you know a subscription to\u00a0<em>Today\u2019s Veterinary Practice<\/em>\u00a0is free?
