But despite their use in human medicine, this treatment modality is only beginning to gain a foothold in mainstream veterinary medicine, as evidenced by our recent Facebook poll:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/todaysveterinarypractice\/posts\/2392906277424088?__xts__[0]=68.ARDcvXADjqOxr0kJQZjZBD4sS-jbF_kK2UIVOzsfcGkHh8vhznglmCBqPdPqGfGL5WXgmvaZAPbGPqgXJwuu9AsgR6_X7a1heeiKmWnaMLkDWb8HXxQZiTXwOM8Py3-Gl2Y_M9sBtBDgcyqNBiYRc1y_ePo-gBHkV94dxb0JcHNCp0JRpd00igwdnFbC4F_1_Ol-nAalM0JPVUegJfsL-s8KsAQYpfvBR3prHrb9RPw68H5TL3z88H9TcdJTgxWkGaNnYL2OOWhPRB0oaCOvwqvM-FLrHishIMGA-INvMCyKzdppaCn2NNOkEq2aI347_KRwfUkLvqv-EK00uEXqkEe_a4ZyAqqVOA&#038;__tn__=-R<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Like the term SCUBA, the term \u201claser\u201d is actually an acronym. It stands for \u201clight amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.\u201d In basic terms, these devices emit light energy that is absorbed by tissues, creating both photothermal and photochemical reactions that create a therapeutic benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Janice L. Huntingford, DVM, MS, DACVSMR, owner and medical director of Essex Animal Hospital, in Ontario, Canada, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/laser-therapy-for-treatment-of-joint-disease-in-dogs-and-cats\/\">wrote<\/a> in <em>Today\u2019s Veterinary Practice<\/em> that laser therapy \u201cis a rapidly growing treatment modality used for a variety of medical conditions in companion animals. PBMT is painless, noninvasive, and easily administered in a primary care setting.\u201d But Huntingford acknowledges that it\u2019s estimated that therapeutic laser devices are used by only 20% of all companion animal practices in North America.<\/p>\n<p>The most commonly used therapeutic lasers in veterinary medicine are Class III lasers, which deliver energy from 1mW to 500mW, and Class IV lasers, which deliver power at greater than 500mW. The Class IV lasers are utilized primarily in surgery to cut or cauterize tissue or otherwise cause controlled damage, while the Class III lasers are intended to improve wound healing, reduce inflammation, and treat musculoskeletal pain without causing damage.
