{"id":16601,"date":"2019-05-24T13:29:09","date_gmt":"2019-05-24T13:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/?p=16601"},"modified":"2022-02-21T14:39:04","modified_gmt":"2022-02-21T14:39:04","slug":"poll-have-you-suspected-clients-of-obtaining-opioids-for-personal-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/ethics-welfare\/poll-have-you-suspected-clients-of-obtaining-opioids-for-personal-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Poll: Have You Suspected Clients of Obtaining Opioids for Personal Use?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We polled <em>Today\u2019s Veterinary Practice<\/em>\u2019s Facebook audience in May and asked: \u201cHave you ever suspected a pet parent of obtaining opioids for his or her pet so he or she can use the painkillers themselves?\u201d Of the 98 respondents, 62% answered \u201cyes\u201d and 38% said \u201cno.\u201d One respondent commented, \u201cNo, but I wouldn\u2019t be shocked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/statement-fda-commissioner-scott-gottlieb-md-fdas-new-resource-guide-support-responsible-opioid?utm_campaign=08152018_Statement_FDA%20Commissioner%20statement%20on%20prescribing%20opioids%20for%20animals&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Eloqua\">recent warning<\/a> from the Food and Drug Administration alerted veterinarians to the problem and urged them to be cautious when prescribing opioids. The FDA says veterinarians must be on the alert for people who may be using their pets to gain access to the drugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognize that opioids and other pain medications have a legitimate and important role in treating pain in animals \u2013 just as they do for people,\u201d FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Fitzgerald said he can pick up on the red flags of pet owners who may be seeking drugs for themselves rather than relief for their animals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey come in and you\u2019ve never seen them before. They know the names of the drugs that they want,\u201d Fitzgerald said. \u201cOften times they want to know the amount, a large amount. More than you would use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kathy Brown said she has also seen people bring their pets in, claiming the animal is in pain with no evidence of any real problem. Brown owns Brentood Animal Hospital on Federal Blvd. in Denver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re addicted, you don\u2019t care what you have to do to get it,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Brown said she is now reluctant to prescribe pain patches to pets after hearing about addicts stealing them to get a fix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know of more than one case where they jump over the fence and rip it off the animal and take it for themselves,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>One woman in Kentucky admitted to police in 2012 she intentionally cut her dog multiple times to get the opioid Tramadol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like complete and total s\u2014t for doing that,\u201d Heather Pereira said during an interview with police, conducted after a suspicious veterinarian\u2019s office turned her in.<\/p>\n<h3>What To Do When You Suspect Abuse<\/h3>\n<p>If you suspect a pet owner of abusing his or her animal to gain access to opioids \u2014 of for any other reason \u2014 contact proper animal welfare agency and your local authorities to report animal cruelty or abuse cases. You can also contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanesociety.org\/forms\/contact-animal-rescue-team\">Animal Rescue Team<\/a> of the Humane Society of the United States.<\/p>\n<h3>Learn
