A team of veterinarians at Oregon State University\u2019s Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine recently performed an unusual diagnostic CT scan and surgery. The patient? A 17-year-old, rare white Bengal tiger named Nora. Nora, who resides at the <a href=\"https:\/\/wildcatridgesanctuary.org\/\">WildCat Ridge Sanctuary<\/a> in Scotts Mill, Oregon, had been feeling unwell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNora had not been eating very well on and off for a few days,\u201d says Cheryl Tuller, the sanctuary\u2019s executive director. \u201cWe saw what we thought was a slight vaginal discharge that cleared up immediately, but we noticed she was much less active than she normally was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sanctuary team first took Nora to their veterinarian\u2019s office in Lake Oswego, but an ultrasound was inconclusive. Photo Credit: Oregon State University<\/p><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u201cWe had treated a cougar previously, but this was our first tiger,\u201d says Dr. Katy Townsend, BVSc(hons) MS DACVS-SA, at Oregon State University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.oregonstate.edu\/\">College of Veterinary Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Though exotic patients are rare at OSU, the veterinary medical team, led by Dr. Marianne Pan, the case manager and an internal medicine resident; veterinary surgeon Dr. Katy Townsend; anesthesiologist Dr. Ronald Mandsager and surgery resident Dr. Lea Mehrkens, immediately explored their options.<\/p>\n<h3>What Is Pyometra?<\/h3>\n<p>Townsend\u2019s team said they suspected pyometra was causing Nora to feel unwell.\u00a0Pyometra, which occurs in domestic felines as well, is an infection in the uterus. It is considered serious and life-threatening and must be treated quickly and aggressively. \u201cPyometra occurs in about 5 to 17% of captive large cats, and with her nonspecific signs, it was one of the top differential diagnoses,\u201d explains Townsend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur anesthesia team, led by Dr. Ron Mandsager, was amazing!\u201d says Townsend. \u201cThey were able to safely anesthetize her and she fit in the CT scanner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe anesthesia portion is the most challenging part of this procedure \u2014 ensuring that she goes to sleep safely and wakes up safely. She was sedated and then an endotracheal tube was placed along with intravenous access to put her completely under anesthesia,\u201d Townsend says.<\/p>\n<h3>Making the Diagnosis<\/h3>\n<p>The CT scan showed a large fluid-filled uterus, with no other major changes in the rest of the abdominal organs. Photo Credit: Oregon State University<\/p><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Both the sanctuary and OSU veterinary teams are relieved that they were able to catch the disease when they did. \u201cPyometra is a life-threatening condition \u2014 the uterus can rupture and she can become septic,\u201d says Townsend. \u201cWe were lucky to catch it when we did and have a team of people who were able to help beautiful Nora.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Nora Post-Surgery<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cNora is doing very well and she is healing,\u201d says Tuller. \u201cHer surgery site looks great, her appetite has returned, and while she is confined to her pavilion area, she is anxious to get back out into her habitat.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15931\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15931\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15931\" src=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/Nora-white-Begal-tiger-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/Nora-white-Begal-tiger-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/Nora-white-Begal-tiger.jpg 427w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15931\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There are several hundred captive white Bengal tigers worldwide, all of whom can trace their ancestry back to a white Bengal tiger caught in Rewa, India, in 1951. Photo Credit: WildCat Ridge Sanctuary.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Nora\u2019s History<\/h3>\n<p>As a young tiger, Nora was chained to a box while people paid to have their photos taken with her, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/wildcatridgesanctuary.org\/residents\/tigers\/nora\/\">the sanctuary\u2019s website<\/a>. When she outgrew that, she was used for breeding. Her cubs were taken away from her in order to be sold as \u201cpets\u201d before their eyes were even open. This was Nora\u2019s life for eight years.<\/p>\n<p>When her owner was found dead, Nora was moved to Tiger Paws Exotic Rescue Facility. She arrived emaciated and in terrible shape. Thankfully, with good food and care, she thrived. But her new owners wanted a better life for her, so she was brought to WildCat Ridge.<\/p>\n<p>The sanctuary also has launched <a href=\"https:\/\/wildcatridgesanctuary.org\/nora-surgery-fundraiser\/\">a fundraising campaign<\/a> to cover the costs associated with her medical care.<\/p>\n<h3>Learn More<\/h3>\n<p>Are exotics a fit for your veterinary practice?
