{"id":15755,"date":"2019-01-08T12:20:55","date_gmt":"2019-01-08T12:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/?p=15755"},"modified":"2022-02-21T15:19:38","modified_gmt":"2022-02-21T15:19:38","slug":"fear-free-research-projects-aim-to-alleviate-stress-in-pets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/news\/fear-free-research-projects-aim-to-alleviate-stress-in-pets\/","title":{"rendered":"Fear Free Research Projects Aim to Alleviate Stress in Pets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fearfreepets.com\/fear-free-research\/\">Fear Free<\/a> has handed out thousands of dollars in support to researchers looking for ways to prevent or reduce fear, anxiety and stress in pets.<\/p>\n<p>The Denver company, which now offers <a href=\"https:\/\/fearfreepets.com\/veterinary-professionals\/\">Fear Free certification courses<\/a> to veterinary and pet professionals, reported issuing grants or cash awards worth $1,000 to $2,500 to:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ragen McGowan, Ph.D., of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purina.com\/meet-purina\/nutrition\/our-pet-care-center\">Nestle Purina Research<\/a>, who studied the effects of the probiotic Bifidobacterium longum (BL999) on anxiety in 24 Labrador retrievers. BL999 works at the gut-brain axis to ameliorate behavioral signs related to separation anxiety, noise phobias, and other manifestations of anxiety, including hypervigilance, excessive vocalization, pacing, panting, compulsive licking, trembling, and house soiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Amanda Hampton, a fourth-year veterinary student at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsu.edu\/vetmed\/\">Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine<\/a>. She found that in comparison to silence and classical music, cat-specific music played before and during physical exams may decrease stress levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ludovica Pierantoni, a veterinary behaviorist from Naples, Italy, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/51593991_Prevalence_of_owner-reported_behaviours_in_dogs_separated_from_the_litter_at_two_different_ages\">her research<\/a> demonstrating that puppy classes can positively affect the behavior of dogs separated from their litters too early.<\/p>\n<p>Joao Da Silva-Monteiro, a Portuguese veterinary behavior resident, for his poster reviewing the use of psychoactive drugs to change stress behaviors of dogs and cats during hospitalization.<\/p>\n<p>Alexis S. Deriberprey, a veterinary student researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vetmed.ufl.edu\/\">University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine<\/a>, who found that cats experience more stress when physical exams are conducted in the treatment room rather than in the exam room.<\/p>\n<h3>2019 Projects Also Receive Funding<\/h3>\n<p>Research by a <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/animalbehavior\/\">Purdue University<\/a> veterinary behavior resident into how a single dose of oral gabapentin can affect dogs during a veterinary examination.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Student research at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernu.edu\/veterinary\/\">Western University College of Veterinary Medicine<\/a> on how enhanced human-animal interactions might reduce canine stress curing veterinary visits.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 An evaluation of the effects of alpha-casozepine in reducing fear, anxiety and stress during veterinary consultations. The research will be conducted by a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anzcvs.org.au\/\">Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary
