General Publication Guidelines
Today’s Veterinary Practice (TVP) provides practical, educational articles that include both standard-of-care and cutting-edge clinical information for the companion animal veterinary practitioner. Articles should emphasize standard-of-care diagnostics and management, but new advances in the field should be presented.
Authorship Requirements
- Authors must be veterinarians and boarded in their specialty areas (i.e., Diplomate) or have a coauthor who is boarded.
Priority Article Formats and Topics for 2025
- Priority Article Formats:
- Algorithm: This article format features a brief text-based introduction and visual flowchart offering clarity and guidance related to diagnosis or treatment for the general practitioner, with references for evidence-based support.
- Q&A Discussion: This article format succinctly addresses the most frequently asked questions in your area of specialty with evidence-based support. Think: “What is the most pressing question you receive from GPs?”
- Top Tips: This article format drills down into specific, “Monday-ready” tips for readers in a numbered format, with a short intro discussion and evidence-based support.
- Case Report: This article format discusses a condition through the lens of a real or theoretical case, complete with history, presentation, diagnostic tests performed, lab results, treatment, and follow-up care.
- Review: This article format reviews the literature on a disease/condition, with a focus on improving the knowledge and skill set of the veterinarian.
- Step-by-Step Tutorial: This article format provides a step-by-step look at a particular procedure with images and/or videos.
- Trends in Veterinary Medicine: This article format takes a more journalistic approach to covering a topic related to veterinary medicine that is beyond direct patient care.
- Priority Article Topics:
- Anesthesia/Pain Management
- Behavior
- Emergency/Critical Care
- We welcome topic submissions in all other clinical areas as well.
Format for Submissions
- Please submit article topic submissions in the following format. Manuscripts, if available, will be considered but the following format is acceptable:

- Overview: 50-100 words on the main ideas to be covered and relevance to a practicing veterinarian.
