{"id":4267,"date":"2019-08-19T09:18:24","date_gmt":"2019-08-19T09:18:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/todaysveterinarynurse.com\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=4267"},"modified":"2022-11-08T21:08:19","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T21:08:19","slug":"poll-are-cat-owners-less-conscientious-about-bringing-their-cats-in-for-preventive-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarynurse.com\/news\/poll-are-cat-owners-less-conscientious-about-bringing-their-cats-in-for-preventive-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Poll: Are Cat Owners Less Conscientious About Bringing Their Cats In for Preventive Care?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day, August 22, we asked our Facebook audience, \u201cAre cat owners less conscientious about bringing in their pets for preventive care than dog owners?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We received 325 responses to our poll question, and a whopping 91% replied \u201cyes,\u201d with less than 10% of respondents replying \u201cno.\u201d Cat owners who do not schedule routine checkups and vaccinations for their pets are putting them at risk from diseases caused by parasites, infectious diseases, lack of dental care, imbalanced nutrition, and more.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4270\" src=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarynurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-15-at-2.07.22-PM-300x180.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarynurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-15-at-2.07.22-PM-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarynurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-15-at-2.07.22-PM-768x462.png 768w, https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarynurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-15-at-2.07.22-PM.png 998w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the American Veterinary Medical Association\u2019s (AVMA) latest edition of Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook 2017-18, it was found that 47.2% of cat-owning households made at least one visit to the veterinarian for preventive care in 2016 compared to 78.8% of dogs.\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/News\/JAVMANews\/Pages\/190115a.aspx\">graph<\/a> below shows\u00a0what percentage of cats are getting preventive care and where they&#8217;re getting it from.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/News\/JAVMANews\/Pages\/190115a.aspx\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18028 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/08\/190115a_7_lg.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"864\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How can your veterinary team improve <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarynurse.com\/articles\/compliance-a-team-effort\/\">compliance<\/a> among cat-owning clients?<\/p>\n<p>Begin by making sure the whole staff is properly trained on the key points of preventive care: vital vaccinations, side effects of common ailments, and the frequency with which to bring a pet in. If clients understand how important preventive care is, they are more likely to schedule wellness checkups. Recommendations for improving compliance include providing educational handouts. Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/KB\/Resources\/Documents\/felinepreventiveguidelines_ppph.pdf\">this one<\/a> from the AAHA and AVMA.<\/p>\n<p>Another important part of feline owner compliance is having a feline-friendly practice. Owners are much more likely to feel comfortable taking their cat to the vet if they can see their cat is comfortable as well. Founded by the American Association of Feline Practitioners, becoming a <a href=\"https:\/\/catfriendly.com\/keep-your-cat-healthy\/cat-friendly-practice\/\">Cat Friendly Practice\u00ae<\/a> can
