It&#8217;s one of the most common reasons a pet owner brings their pet in to the veterinary office.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoetis.com\/\">Zoetis<\/a> designated August as Itchy Pet Awareness Month and launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoetisus.com\/products\/cats-and-dogs\/dermatology-portfolio\/resources.aspx#august\">website<\/a>\u00a0to raise awareness about pet skin health needs and a toolkit for veterinary professionals to use as a conversation-starter with pet owners.<\/p>\n<p>The top four reasons pet owners bring their dogs in for veterinary visits are skin-related issues, including <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarynurse.com\/articles\/from-the-field-allergic-dermatitis-in-dogs-and-cats\/\">skin allergies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarynurse.com\/articles\/otitis-externa-inflammation-of-the-ear-canal\/\">ear infections<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarynurse.com\/articles\/scratching-the-surface-of-allergies-in-dogs\/\">skin lumps and bumps<\/a>, and skin infections. Symptoms can be difficult to discern from normal behavior.<\/p>\n<p>The toolkit includes promotional materials, including waiting room posters and assets for Facebook posts and emails, that veterinary practices can use in educating clients about their animals\u2019 itching behavior.<\/p>\n<h3>The Itchy Pet: When It Becomes a Chronic Problem<\/h3>\n<p>Chronic itch behavior can get in the way of everyday activities, including disrupting the sleeping patterns of both dogs and their owners. As dogs become even more a part of the family, they are increasingly finding their way into their owners\u2019 beds \u2013 in fact, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/08927936.2018.1529354\">2018 study<\/a>, more than half (55%) of the adult women participants shared their bed with at least one dog. This makes it more important to identify itch behavior to ensure all involved are maintaining their quality of life.
