26 states are looking for answers in the wake of a salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey. The CDC has reported that 90 people in total have been afflicted by the disease. According to USA Today, \u201cThe CDC said the strain is linked to raw turkey products from multiple sources, including dog food containing raw turkey.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 26 states in which cases have been reported are as follows: Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

While a common supplier linked to the turkey products has yet to be identified, the CDC is not requesting that stores refrain from selling raw turkey products. Instead, the Center is advising that consumers should take basic precautions–thoroughly washing hands, ensuring that any raw turkey is cooked completely, and washing areas where raw turkey is handled.<\/p>\n

Since these precautions don\u2019t apply to raw dog food, we advise veterinarians to ask that clients be aware if raw turkey is an ingredient in their pet\u2019s food.<\/p>\n
