The names themselves cause confusion, but more importantly, state practice acts compound that confusion\u2014if veterinary technicians are even mentioned. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E772\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E773\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Credentialed Veterinary Technicians\/Nurses play a vital role in patient care on a daily basis. While many VTs feel they complete more <\/span><span id=\"E774\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">tasks<\/span><span id=\"E775\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> than a human nurse, the responsibility is essentially the same\u2014nursing care of patients. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E776\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E777\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">When the public was surveyed about the role a veterinary technician performs in pet care, a majority do not know what the role is or what constitutes it. Also, they do not feel that schooling is a part of it, while they are certain about the scope of duties a nurse carries out, and the schooling that is required to become an RN. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E778\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E779\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">As a result, the Veterinary Nurse Initiative (VNI) believed there was a need to create change for the better and unite this phenomenal profession. Led by a working group of credentialed veterinary technicians, RNs and a strategist, VNI is aiming high to make changes in all 50 states to standardize credentialing, define the scope of practice, and protect the title. The working group is in the early stages of creating an executive committee made of industry support personnel to further develop and create change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E780\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E781\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">The VNI was excited to learn of NAVC\u2019s decision to support the standardized credentialing by changing the name of the publication from <\/span><em><span id=\"E782\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Today\u2019s Veterinary Technician<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E783\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> to <\/span><em><span id=\"E784\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Today\u2019s Veterinary Nurse<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E785\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E786\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E787\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u201cThe NAVC fully supports a single credential for veterinary nurses nationwide, and we believe it will improve the level of patient care, reduce pet owners\u2019 confusion, and lead to an improved public perception for the great work these individuals are doing on a daily basis,\u201d said Tom Bohn, CAE, Chief Executive Officer of the NAVC. Lynne E. Johnson, RVT, Editor in Chief of <\/span><em><span id=\"E788\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Today\u2019s Veterinary Nurse<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E789\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> noted, \u201cI\u2019m thrilled that NAVTA is leading the way with the Veterinary Nurse Initiative. The change to <\/span><em><span id=\"E790\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Today\u2019s Veterinary Nurse<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E791\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> shows the NAVC support and commitment to the profession and the initiative.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E792\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E794\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Banfield<\/span><span id=\"E796\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">, Royal <\/span><span id=\"E798\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Canin<\/span><span id=\"E800\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">, and <\/span><span id=\"E802\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">BluePearl<\/span><span id=\"E804\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> Veterinary Partners also lend their support to the VNI. \u201cThe amount of training veterinary technicians receive builds their knowledge and skills in many areas from patient care to radiography to nutrition,\u201d says Brent <\/span><span id=\"E806\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Mayabb<\/span><span id=\"E808\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">, DVM and Royal <\/span><span id=\"E810\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Canin\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E812\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> Chief Veterinary Officer. \u201cWith this extensive training and their commitment to the profession, we fully support the NAVTA-led Veterinary Nurse Initiative to recognize the value veterinary technicians bring to pets and to the veterinary team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E813\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E814\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">According to Jennifer <\/span><span id=\"E816\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Welser<\/span><span id=\"E818\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">, DVM, DAVCO, Chief Medical Officer at <\/span><span id=\"E820\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">BluePearl<\/span><span id=\"E822\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> Veterinary Partners, \u201cWe believe the Veterinary Nurse Initiative is an important step toward acknowledging the skill exhibited by our veterinary technicians. By supporting the effort, we are fully recognizing nursing as a valued profession in veterinary medicine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E823\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E824\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">The VNI will continue the movement in 2018 through legislative activities in select states, continue high level discussions with both veterinary and nursing alliances, and
