Drawing from the nationwide practice\u2019s extensive research, as well as findings from its electronic veterinary medical records database and more than 8 million annual pet visits, this column is intended to explore topics and spark conversations relevant to veterinary practices that ultimately help create a better world for pets.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E804\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E805\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Banfield Pet Hospital recently released its 2017 <\/span><em><span id=\"E806\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">State of Pet Health Report<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E807\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">, highlighting a widespread trend of overweight pets nationwide. Indiana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and Washington tied for fifth place at 34%. The prevalence estimates fo<\/span><span id=\"E814\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">r each state are shown in <\/span><strong><span id=\"E815\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">FIGURE<\/span><span id=\"E816\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> 1<\/span><\/strong><span id=\"E817\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">. How did your state do? <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E827\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E828\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Here are some tips and tricks for talking with your clients about their dog\u2019s weight:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"E829\" class=\"qowt-li-11_0 qowt-list qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E830\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Prevention is key. Remind owners that regular check-ups and nutritional counseling can help keep their dogs at a healthy weight.<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E831\" class=\"qowt-li-11_0 qowt-list qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E832\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Show, don\u2019t tell. Educate your clients about body condition scoring, and show them how their pet ranks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E833\" class=\"qowt-li-11_0 qowt-list qowt-stl-Body\"><span id=\"E834\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Give treats in moderation.
