This issue aims to keep us all on the cusp of new information while refreshing everyday skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What We\u2019re Reading<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>A member of our Editorial Advisory Board shares a recent open access publication, including their key takeaways and its practical conclusion.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Caregiver Perspectives on the Value of Dogs and Their Effects on Children in Private and Public Spaces<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">Duncan-Sutherland N, Hunt M, Shepherd M, Kool B. <i>J Vet Behav.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jveb.2025.01.002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jveb.2025.01.002<\/i><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>WHAT WAS INVESTIGATED?<\/b> This study looked at the perspective of 256\u00a0child caregivers regarding dog\u2013child interactions in public and private spaces in New\u00a0Zealand through an anonymous online survey and in-person focus groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>WHAT WAS DISCUSSED?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\">Dogs are viewed as valued members of the family, and most families feel it is very important for children to be around animals.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\">Many caregivers reported incidents that provoked fear, emotional distress, and\/or direct injury to children resulting from known family dogs; off-leash, stray, or roaming dogs; or aggression between dogs.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\">Respondents who had experienced negative interactions with dogs were more likely to show increased protective behaviors over children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>TAKE-HOME POINTS<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It is incumbent upon veterinary team members to provide education to clients on keeping kids and dogs safe, including normal behaviors in both species, local regulations and leash laws, and reporting of bites.
