Penn Vet\u2019s Class of 2026 will be the first to experience the school\u2019s fully integrated competency-based veterinary education curriculum.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current rate of biomedical discovery means that even over the course of a veterinary education, there will be new diagnostic capabilities and treatments when a student graduates that didn\u2019t exist when they began school, so we must educate and cultivate lifelong learners,\u201d said Dr. Kathryn F. Michel, an associate dean for veterinary education and a professor of nutrition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe transformation is immense and moves Penn Vet\u2019s preclinical curriculum from a discipline-based model to a fully integrated curriculum,\u201d said Martin J. Hackett, the chief communications officer at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.<\/p>\n

Dr. Michel said competency-based veterinary education<\/a> is modeled on the principle of backward design in education.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt starts with a desired endpoint or outcome and works backward to create a road map for getting there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Penn Vet\u2019s new curriculum starts with a two-year core that covers \u201cAnimal in Health,\u201d focused on the healthy animal\u2019s form and function, in Year One and \u201cAnimal in Disease,\u201d which explores disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, in Year Two.<\/p>\n

In addition, two \u201cribbon courses\u201d are threaded through the first two years:<\/p>\n
