{"id":7248,"date":"2020-03-01T16:27:22","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T00:27:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/?p=7248"},"modified":"2022-06-15T17:45:20","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T17:45:20","slug":"coronavirus-avma-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/coronavirus-avma-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"AVMA Offers an Array of Coronavirus Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Veterinary professionals looking to educate themselves and pet owners about coronaviruses, including one that has infected thousands of people worldwide, are invited to access several documents compiled by the American Veterinary Medical Association.<\/p>\n<p>The newest coronavirus, abbreviated COVID-19, is not believed to pose a threat to pets, and they are not known carriers or transmitters of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Among the available AVMA resources are:\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cCOVID-19 in Humans\u201d: <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3amxOjE\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/3amxOjE<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u201cCoronaviruses in Domestic Species\u201d: <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2VAQOGU\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/2VAQOGU<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u201cCoronavirus: Detailed Taxonomy\u201d: <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2wjuYwS\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/2wjuYwS<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The AVMA blog item \u201cWhat Do You Need to Know About Coronavirus?\u201d and additional links are posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2I9OHSr\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/2I9OHSr<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, pet health insurer Trupanion reported Feb. 29 that it found \u201cno unusual increase or change in the frequency of illnesses\u201d among animals seen at North American veterinary hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe monitor our data on a very granular level \u2014 daily, weekly and monthly and by breed, country, city and even at a neighborhood level \u2014 to make sure we understand and are on top of any health-related trends that might be out of the norm,\u201d said Mary Rothlisberger, vice president of analytics. \u201cAs of today, we have not seen any increases or changes in the frequency of illnesses that would appear unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reports that a Hong Kong dog tested \u201cweak positive\u201d for COVID-19 raised fears that pets might spread the disease. The <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/wsava-pets-arent-a-coronavirus-threat\/\">World Small Animal Veterinary Association<\/a>, in a statement released Feb. 29, advised that the case might not be linked to the current outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Hong Kong SAR Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has reported that the dog, which is showing no relevant clinical signs, has been quarantined and further samples will be collected to confirm if the dog is actually infected with the virus, or if the test result has been caused by environmental contamination,\u201d WSAVA stated.<\/p>\n<p>WSAVA pointed members to a World Organization for Animal Health document for additional information about COVID-19. \u201cQuestions and Answers on the 2019 Coronavirus Disease\u201d is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3antpgh\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/3antpgh<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Did you know a subscription to Today\u2019s Veterinary Business is free to qualified veterinary professionals?
