{"id":6102,"date":"2019-08-09T10:55:14","date_gmt":"2019-08-09T17:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/?p=6102"},"modified":"2022-03-02T21:34:23","modified_gmt":"2022-03-02T21:34:23","slug":"wsava-survey-reveals-well-being-trouble-spots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/wsava-survey-reveals-well-being-trouble-spots\/","title":{"rendered":"WSAVA survey reveals well-being trouble spots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Women, younger veterinary professionals and veterinary nurses make up the groups most seriously affected by stress and diminished well-being, according to preliminary results from a survey conducted by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/eliminating-the-stigma\/\">findings were presented<\/a> at the WSAVA World Congress by Dutch psychologist Nienke Endenburg, Ph.D., who co-chairs the organization\u2019s Professional Wellness Group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research \u2014 the first global study of <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/supporting-emotional-and-mental-health-in-the-veterinary-profession\/?highlight=mental%2Bhealth\">veterinary wellness<\/a> \u2014 confirms a probable correlation between a career in veterinary medicine and an elevated risk of mental health issues,\u201d Dr. Endenburg said. \u201cIt\u2019s likely that this is caused by a combination of factors, including working environment, personal characteristics and client pressures. We are very concerned at the impact this is having on thousands of veterinary professionals worldwide and believe it must be addressed without delay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The online responses of 4,000 veterinary professionals were analyzed using the Kessler Psychological Distress tool, which measures anxiety and depression, a satisfaction with life scale and a satisfaction with career scale, WSAVA reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results also indicate a reluctance to talk about mental health in Africa and Asia,\u201d WSAVA stated. \u201cWhile this may not be an easy topic to discuss in any culture, as the profession is developing very quickly in these continents, particularly in Asia, the WSAVA believes that barriers to the open discussion of mental health issues are of significant concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next step is deeper examination of the results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe study has provided us with some very important data, which we are now analyzing in more detail and preparing for scientific publication,\u201d Dr. Endenburg. \u201cWe will then develop an urgent action plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the plan, we will share the helpful resources already created by some veterinary associations.
