{"id":5084,"date":"2019-03-24T12:27:35","date_gmt":"2019-03-24T19:27:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/?p=5084"},"modified":"2022-03-15T20:46:03","modified_gmt":"2022-03-15T20:46:03","slug":"hills-widens-recall-of-canned-dog-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navc.sitepreview.app\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/hills-widens-recall-of-canned-dog-food\/","title":{"rendered":"Hill\u2019s Expands Recall of Canned Dog Food"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hill\u2019s Pet Nutrition has voluntarily recalled eight additional SKUs of canned dog food because of elevated levels of vitamin D discovered in a supplier\u2019s vitamin premix.<\/p>\n<p>The newly flagged Prescription Diet and Science Diet wet foods include:<\/p>\n[table id=14 \/]\n<p>Too much vitamin D in a dog\u2019s diet has been linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/practical-toxicology-prepared-toxic-exposures-dogs-cats\/\">hypercalcemia<\/a>, which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration noted causes symptoms similar to the ingestion of rodenticide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure, and dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss,\u201d Hill\u2019s reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPet parents with dogs who have consumed any of the products listed and are exhibiting any of these signs should contact their veterinarian,\u201d the company added. \u201cIn most cases, complete recovery is expected after discontinuation of feeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The initial voluntary recall, announced Jan. 31, followed a pet owner\u2019s complaint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur investigation confirmed elevated levels of vitamin D due to a supplier error,\u201d Hill\u2019s stated.<\/p>\n<p>The complete list of recalled canned foods, including 20 additional lots of previously recalled products, is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2FxpBfP\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/2FxpBfP<\/a>. Hill\u2019s is answering pet owner and veterinarian questions at 800-445-5777.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #008000\">What should veterinarians do?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In light of the Hill\u2019s Pet Nutrition voluntary recall, the <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/fda-works-with-pfizer-to-reduce-drug-shortage\/\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration<\/a> has this advice for veterinarians:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst, don\u2019t sell the recalled foods to your clients, and contact the manufacturer for further instructions. The FDA also encourages veterinarians to contact clients who have purchased recalled products, if they have the means to do so (such as through medical records or sales receipts).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FDA urges veterinarians treating vitamin D toxicity to ask their clients for a diet history. We also welcome case reports, especially those confirmed through diagnostics. You can submit these reports electronically through the Safety Reporting Portal or by calling your state\u2019s FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinators.
