But then big-box stores and online retailers began selling therapeutic formulas as well. Chewy.com, for instance, asks the customer for her veterinarian\u2019s telephone number and calls to get the OK for the desired therapeutic diet, then ships it.<\/p>\n<p>How can veterinarians compete with this ease of ordering and convenient delivery?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than looking at online retailers as competition, it\u2019s helpful to consider food purchases from the perspective of pet owners today,\u201d said Kristine Costello, senior brand manager with the Professional Engagement Team at Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnline shoppers report making 52 percent of their non-grocery purchases online,\u201d she said. \u201cFortunately, veterinarians aren\u2019t limited to the traditional strategy of only selling pet foods \u2014 whether therapeutic, well pet or both \u2014 in their clinics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepending on which manufacturers they partner with, they can also <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/deliver-the-goods\/\">offer home delivery<\/a> \u2014 and even automatic shipment, to ensure compliance \u2014 to their clients.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Forge a Business Relationship<\/h3>\n<p>Partnering with online pharmacies is one option available to practitioners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis enables their clients to experience the same ease of ordering and enables the veterinarian to stay involved with the pet\u2019s care,\u201d said Catherine Lenox, DVM, CVA, DACVN, a scientific services manager at Royal Canin. \u201cMany of these sites can also provide auto-ship and other features.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As always, the practice\u2019s secret weapon is caring about the client.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVeterinarians can focus on the personal touch, provide high-value pet health care services and offer customized <a href=\"https:\/\/navc.com\/certifications\/pncc\/\">nutrition recommendations<\/a>,\u201d suggested Victoria Carmella, DVM, director of veterinary services at Blue Buffalo Co.<\/p>\n<p>The key is making it easier for customers to buy pet food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVeterinary clinics can offer unexpected service and access to simple, free auto-delivery programs that have been shown to increase client compliance in feeding therapeutic diets,\u201d Dr. Carmella said.<\/p>\n<p>One option, Dr. Lenox said, is for the clinic to track when a client gets a new bag or case of food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen they can contact the client via email, phone or text message for reordering,\u201d Dr. Lenox said. \u201cThis helps make sure the owner doesn\u2019t run out of food, ensures diet compliance and makes it easy for the client. Another option is the online pharmacy portal.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Straight to the Client\u2019s Door<\/h3>\n<p>With the help of some manufacturers, offering clients the convenience of home delivery grows easier all the time.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Purina Pro Plan Vet Direct is a free program through which a veterinary clinic can set up clients to order both Purina therapeutic formulas and Pro Plan well-pet diets online and receive free home delivery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClinics simply enroll in the program and receive a clinic code that they provide to clients who wish to order online,\u201d Costello said. \u201cWith Purina as the direct seller, participating clinics receive commission on the sale of products without having to actually take possession of the products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said this kind of program can benefit clinics in several ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Less inventory.<\/strong> \u201cWith so many therapeutic diets available, it can be difficult and expensive for a practice with finite space to stock every product while also tracking supplies and expiration dates. We can offer veterinarians a virtual shelf with more than 65 Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets and Pro Plan formulas.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved compliance.<\/strong> \u201cWith the ease of home delivery, owners are less likely to run out of their pet\u2019s food and can set up automatic refills, similar to what consumers do with their own prescriptions.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved sales.<\/strong> \u201cBy making it convenient for clients to order and reorder food in all sizes from a clinic\u2019s virtual shelves, veterinarians can actually increase their sales of pet food.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Limit What You Stock<\/h3>\n<p>Inventory space is an issue at nearly all veterinary clinics, Dr. Lenox said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best option is to keep the most commonly sold diets and the most urgently needed diets in stock,\u201d she said. \u201cUrgently needed diets would include things like gastrointestinal diets for patients with gastrointestinal upset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor diets that are not used as often, the clinic can place a special order with the manufacturer or online pharmacy. Royal Canin, for example, offers overnight shipping for orders placed by a specific time during the day, often making it easy for clinics to get their food shipment within a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the flexibility available through online pharmacies and food manufacturers, there\u2019s no reason the veterinary clinic should limit food sales to therapeutic diets, the experts say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimilar to questions around inventory space, selection or display, decisions should be viewed from a category management standpoint,\u201d Dr. Lenox said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVets can offer the healthy pet diets sold in stores. They can be ordered online through the manufacturer\u2019s website or orders can be coordinated through the online pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe veterinary team is making a recommendation, often because a specific diet is right for their patient, even if it happens to be an over-the-counter diet,\u201d she added. \u201cOne example would be an over-the-counter care diet for weight management or sensitive skin. These options are available at retailers, but the veterinarian may be recommending a specific diet for a specific reason for a patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The Veterinarian Makes the Call<\/h3>\n<p>Diet recommendations should be left to the clinician, said Blue Buffalo\u2019s Carmella.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVeterinarians make individual decisions about the role of nutrition in their respective practices,\u201d Carmella said. \u201cWe work closely with veterinarians to meet the needs of their clients and patients by providing effective, high-quality therapeutic diets and premium OTC dog and cat foods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur key messages in lunch and learns, dinner meetings and sales calls are consistent,\u201d she said. \u201cWe provide veterinarians with natural formulas that help manage specific therapeutic dietary needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegarding nutrition advice for clients, it\u2019s important to listen closely to pet owners throughout the process,\u201d she added. \u201cMany pet owners prefer the same wholesome natural ingredients in veterinary-exclusive diets as the OTC foods they feed. So we help veterinarians and their clients learn about natural alternatives in therapeutic dog and cat nutrition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Costello, of Purina Pro Plan, said there\u2019s no substitute for the value of the relationship between the veterinarian and the pet owner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust as medication use should be prescribed and monitored on an ongoing basis by a veterinarian, so should the use of therapeutic diets,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Royal Canin\u2019s Dr. Lenox said food sales are just as much, if not more, about client compliance to dietary recommendations as about revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVeterinary teams make recommendations for a reason and want their patients to be as healthy and happy as possible,\u201d she said. \u201cPart of this is owners adhering to dietary recommendations. It\u2019s a 45-minute drive for me with traffic these days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nurse:\u00a0<\/strong>We\u2019ll send a 6-pound bag of the food and a bag of [product name] home with you today to get Casey started, but you can actually order his refills online and have the food delivered to your home. I\u2019ll provide you with our clinic\u2019s code and give you the information on enrolling him. It\u2019s really easy. A lot of our clients actually set up their food purchases with automatic renewals so they don\u2019t run out of food.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Catherine Lenox, a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and scientific services manager for Royal Canin, recommends asking clients at every visit what they are feeding their pets and telling them the diet is available through the clinic\u2019s online pharmacy.
