What\u2019s better than a video conference between a veterinarian and an advice-seeking pet owner?<\/p>\n

Cal Lai, co-founder and CEO of Vet24seven Inc., thinks it\u2019s a simple conversation with Amazon\u2019s Alexa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody wants to be seen on camera,\u201d Lai said. \u201cOur brains don\u2019t like to see you and talk to you in two different dimensions.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Lai and business partner Edward L. Blach, DVM, MS, MBA, introduced in July during the American Veterinary Medical Association convention was MyPetDoc. The free voice app, compatible with Alexa devices and eventually with Google Assistant-enabled devices, is designed to help dog and cat owners decide what to do with their ailing pet.<\/p>\n

MyPetDoc communicates verbally with users through a series of decision trees, a technology based on a combination of human and artificial intelligence. The starting point was 35,000 engagements with the Mountain View, California, company\u2019s Ask.Vet service.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did some analysis and realized that we had what no one else had: recorded conversations between consumers and veterinarians,\u201d Lai said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we decided to do is take that and create an artificial intelligence model around it, create a triage chatbot that can respond to a question. \u2026 It allows a consumer to talk to Amazon Alexa and have a real conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

MyPetDoc converses with anyone who links the app, or skill, to a device such as Amazon\u2019s Echo Plus. The app is smart enough to address five common conditions in a dog or cat: vomiting<\/a>, diarrhea, urinary problems, itching and scratching, and eye issues. The company in the coming months expects to add eight other frequently-asked-about conditions and more animal species.<\/p>\n

A typical conversation goes like this:<\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/strong> Thanks for contacting MyPetDoc. What\u2019s going on with your pet?<\/p>\n

Pet owner:<\/strong> My puppy has diarrhea.<\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/strong> Uh-oh. Poor dog. Are you noticing any other symptoms, including things like changes in eating or drinking?<\/p>\n

Pet owner:<\/strong> No, just the diarrhea.<\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/strong> All right, let me get a few background details real quick. Is your dog a boy or a girl?<\/p>\n

Pet owner:<\/strong> A girl.<\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/strong> And what is your pup\u2019s name?<\/p>\n

Pet owner:<\/strong> Macy.<\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/strong> What kind of dog is she?<\/p>\n

Pet owner:<\/strong> Labrador.<\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/strong> And how old is she?<\/p>\n

Pet owner:<\/strong> Six months old.<\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/strong> Has Macy been spayed?<\/p>\n

Pet owner:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/strong> All right. Has she had her puppy shots?<\/p>\n

Pet owner:<\/strong> No, she hasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Alexa<\/strong>: All right. It\u2019s really important to do that soon to protect her from common diseases. And has she been dewormed?<\/p>\n

Pet owner<\/strong>: No, she hasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/strong> That\u2019s also very important to do. Worms are very common in young animals and can cause a variety of problems, plus they can be a health hazard to their humans. Back to the diarrhea. Is there blood in the diarrhea?<\/p>\n

Pet owner:<\/strong> Yes, there is some.<\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/strong> Diarrhea is very serious in young puppies since they can become dehydrated quickly. Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by something they ate, an intestinal blockage or a viral infection like parvo. Since she hasn\u2019t had all her vaccinations, it\u2019s possible she has parvo. Would you like some information about parvo?<\/p>\n

Pet owner:<\/strong> Yes, that would be great.<\/p>\n

Alexa<\/strong>: Our recommendation is that you seek veterinary care immediately for Macy as this could be serious. If you have more questions that you\u2019d like to get answered first, you can speak to one of our vets now. Do you want to talk to one?<\/p>\n

While MyPetDoc is free, Vet24seven makes money by connecting a pet owner with a consulting veterinarian.<\/p>\n

If MyPetDoc determines that the pet has an urgent health issue, the chat is cut short.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are certain stop points,\u201d Dr. Blach said. \u201cIf we sense that something\u2019s critical \u2014 bleeding, the animal is comatose \u2014 we cut off the conversation.
