According to the organization, nearly three-fourths of all U.S. veterinarians are AVMA members. Women make up 61.5% of the membership. Millennials, at 37%, are the largest generational group. \u201cAlmost 160 years ago, about 40 veterinary surgeons from seven states gathered in New York to form what became the American Veterinary Medical Association,\u201d said Executive Vice President and CEO Janet Donlin, DVM. \u201cWe are so immensely grateful for the support and commitment of our members, and we are honored to serve them in all that we do, from policy, resources, tools and continuing education to important advocacy work, insurance plans and so much more.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Louisiana Hospital Is AAHA\u2019s Practice of the Year<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lafayette Veterinary Care Center in Lafayette, Louisiana, was named the 2022 AAHA-Accredited Practice of the Year. Lafayette is a 13-doctor practice that provides around-the-clock emergency services and operates a boarding, grooming and day care facility. The three runners-up recognized at the American Animal Hospital Association\u2019s Connexity conference were Stack Veterinary Hospital in Syracuse, New York; Four Seasons Veterinary Specialists in Loveland, Colorado; and MedVet New Orleans in Metairie, Louisiana. In other news, Denver practice owner Margot Vahrenwald, DVM, was named AAHA\u2019s 2022-2023 president and Grand Rapids, Michigan, practice owner Lynn Happel, DVM, joined the board of directors.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Thrive Pet Healthcare Appoints a New CEO<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thrive Pet Healthcare promoted its president, Odis Pirtle, to CEO, replacing Stephen Hadley, DVM, MBA, who was named executive vice chairman of the board. Pirtle previously served as CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarybusiness.com\/pathway-and-thrive-chains-share-executive-talent\/\">Thrive Affordable Vet Care<\/a> and in leadership positions at Pfizer Animal Health and Zoetis Inc. Thrive operates more than 350 veterinary hospitals nationwide.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solensia Is Available for Feline OA Pain<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoetis Inc. started U.S. distribution of Solensia (frunevetmab injection), an FDA-approved monoclonal antibody treatment for the control of osteoarthritis pain in cats. \u201cFor the first time ever in the U.S., we have the potential to reduce the impact of O.A. pain through a single, monthly injection administered in the veterinary clinic,\u201d said Laura Olsen, Zoetis\u2019s senior vice president of U.S. Petcare. The Food and Drug Administration approved Solensia in January 2022.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Merck to Acquire Virtual Fencing Company<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merck Animal Health agreed to acquire Vence, the manufacturer of a virtual fencing system designed for rotational grazing and livestock management. Terms were not disclosed. \u201cVence\u2019s virtual fencing technology can reduce the need for fencing to subdivide pastures and allows producers and ranchers to manage their cattle and grass inventory while reducing costs of labor and fencing materials,\u201d Merck reported.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>New From Purina: A Smart Litterbox<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestl\u00e9 Purina PetCare released the Petivity Smart Litterbox System, which uses artificial intelligence to learn a cat\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/behavior\/on-your-best-behavior-diagnosis-management-of-feline-urine-marking\/\">litterbox patterns<\/a> \u201cand identify subtle but meaningful changes in weight, waste type and elimination schedule,\u201d according to the company. \u201cA monitor, which can run on battery power or be plugged into an electrical outlet, is placed under each litterbox in the household,\u201d Purina noted. \u201cSensors gather precise data to track each cat\u2019s weight and litterbox activity. The monitor and A.I. detect changes that may be associated with weight issues or health conditions that require veterinary diagnosis. Cat owners receive data from the monitor via the Petivity mobile app, which alerts them to early changes that may be cause for concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Investors Give $35 Million to Scratch<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scratch Financial Inc., which operates the Scratchpay financing platform for veterinary clients, raised $35 million in Series C funding. The money \u201cwill be used to accelerate the development of new technology to help medical providers better connect with their clients and manage the end-to-end patient experience,\u201d according to Scratch. The round was led by Norwest Venture Partners, with participation from Alumni Ventures, Companion Fund, Struck Capital, SWS Venture Capital, TTV Capital and
