Utah State Brings DVM Program on Campus
Utah State University has broken ground on the Veterinary Medical Education Building in preparation for starting a four-year in-state veterinary program. Students now study for two years in Logan, Utah, before heading to Washington State University to complete the DVM program. “The first class of students who will earn their doctor of veterinary medicine degrees entirely in Utah will begin their coursework (in the) fall semester of 2025,” the College of Veterinary Medicine stated.
WSAVA Publishes Reproduction Guidelines
The World Small Animal Veterinary Association has released Global Guidelines on Reproduction Control. “For many years, our default advice has been that dogs should be neutered and bitches spayed, but, in the light of new scientific evidence, it’s time for a paradigm shift in our thinking,” said Dr. Stefano Romagnoli, who chairs WSAVA’s Reproduction Control Committee. Idexx to Offer Pancreatitis Test
Idexx Laboratories is planning the launch of the Catalyst Pancreatic Lipase Test, a single-slide solution for canine and feline patients suspected of pancreatitis. The test, which offers quantitative results in under 10 minutes, should be available in the United States and Canada beginning in September.
Bionote Releases Canine Heartworm Test
Bionote USA has added a one-step rapid test to detect canine heartworm. “After collecting a sample, veterinarians or technicians simply add two drops of serum, plasma or whole blood to the sample hole in the CHW testing device and wait five to 10 minutes for results to be indicated,” Bionote stated.
Missouri Hires Veterinary College Dean
Dr. Srinand “Sri” Sreevatsan, the associate dean for research and graduate studies at Michigan State University, was named dean of the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. He will start his new job on Aug. 1.
Ellie Provides New Services for Specialists
Ellie Diagnostics launched Ellie Specialty, a platform for veterinary specialists. The offering streamlines lab orders, results and reporting across a nationwide network of laboratories. “This will greatly improve the quality of diagnostics, as the streamlined workflow reduces errors and mitigates potential delays in testing,” Ellie reported.
Pangolia Enters Telehealth Market
The digital media and e-commerce company Pangolia has introduced a veterinary telehealth service. According to the company, PangoVet customers pay $60 for a 20-minute video call with a licensed veterinary expert. Pangolia’s media brands include Catster and Dogster.
Roo Teams Up With Fear Free
Roo, a veterinary relief work agency, is partnering with the Fear Free organization. According to Roo, “Veterinary practices and professionals who are Fear Free certified will have certification badges added to their Roo profiles, making it easier for Fear Free certified veterinary practices to get relief from certified veterinary professionals. Additionally, special pricing is available to Roo hospitals interested in pursuing Fear Free veterinary practice certification.”
AAVMC Hires Interim CEO
Dorothy “Dotty” Gray was named interim CEO of the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges, succeeding Dr. Andrew T. Maccabe. A search is underway for a permanent CEO.
Pawlicy Advisor Promotes Pet Insurance Through ezyVet
Users of ezyVet practice management software can opt into services from the pet insurance comparison website Pawlicy Advisor. The pairing supports sending automated educational reminders about pet insurance to clients. “This integration increases pet insurance adoption for clinics, which in turn can increase their revenue and make treatment conversations easier for clinics,” a Pawlicy Advisor spokesperson said.
Merck Veterinary Manual Appoints Top Editor
Dr. Laurie Hess has been named editor-in-chief of Merck Veterinary Manual and the director of scientific affairs. She previously was the lead exotic animal veterinarian for online retailer Chewy and the director of veterinary medicine at Petco.
