Dechra’s Antiemetic for Dogs and Cats Earns FDA Approval
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Emeprev Injectable Solution, an in-clinic option indicated for the prevention and treatment of acute vomiting in dogs and the treatment of vomiting in cats. The manufacturer, Dechra, reported that Emeprev (maropitant citrate) requires no refrigeration. It contains benzyl alcohol, a preservative demonstrated to act as a local anesthetic and reduce pain during injection.
Elanco Rebrands Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody
Elanco Animal Health’s Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody has received full approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the treatment of canine parvovirus. The product will join Elanco’s Tru portfolio under the new brand name Trutect.
NAVLE to Undergo Independent Audit
The International Council for Veterinary Assessment has agreed to initiate an audit of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination, which saw a record 9,301 examinations administered during the 2024-25 testing cycle. According to the ICVA, “Recently, members of the veterinary community have raised questions around how the NAVLE is developed, administered and scored. To ensure the NAVLE continues to be a fair and impartial assessment of candidates’ entry-level knowledge, skills and abilities, we have made the decision to initiate an audit of the examination.”
Embrace Exceeds $1 Billion in Insurance Payouts
Embrace Pet Insurance has surpassed $1 billion in veterinary claim reimbursements. The Ohio company has processed over 6.6 million claims since 2003. According to Embrace, the largest claim covered was $48,534 for a toy-sized mixed-breed dog treated for aspiration pneumonia and a heart murmur in 2023.
Purina Donates to 5 Veterinary Schools
Pet food maker Nestlé Purina PetCare has made donations to five U.S. veterinary schools to support research and scientific developments in areas such as nutrition, dermatology, cognition and canine performance. The donation amounts were not announced. The recipients are the University of Pennsylvania, Auburn University, the University of Florida, Colorado State University and Cornell University.
Patterson to Distribute LifePulse’s VetPulse 2000
LifePulse Corp. has reached an agreement with Patterson Veterinary for the distribution of LifePulse’s patented VetPulse 2000 device. The electroporation product supports a minimally invasive treatment option for cancerous tumors in animals such as horses, dogs and cats.
Wynwood Dog Food Plant to Open in 2027
Wynwood Dog Food Co. plans to open a 13,000-square-foot production facility in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood. “The new factory marks a major milestone for the company as it prepares for national expansion,” Wynwood reported. Set to open in early 2027, the new space will support the growth of Wynwood’s Fresh Rx prescription diets and its Complete & Balanced everyday meals.
FelineVMA Updates Cat Transport Guidelines
The Feline Veterinary Medical Association has published the updated “Position Statements on the Transportation of Cats in Motor Vehicles and Hybrid Cats” in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery. “This update emphasizes the role of how transporting cats impacts patient distress and has the potential to impair feline welfare,” said Dr. Ilona Rodan, who chairs the FelineVMA’s Feline Welfare Committee. UC Davis Chooses ScribbleVet Scribe Tool
The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine has adopted the AI-powered scribe ScribbleVet across its veterinary clinical facilities. ScribbleVet uses artificial intelligence to complete veterinary SOAP notes during patient exams by recording the appointment. “UC Davis also conducted an extensive security review of ScribbleVet to ensure client confidentiality,” the company stated. “Clients can also opt out of the tool, if desired.”
Instinct Science Offers PIMS for General Practices
The veterinary software company Instinct Science has launched Instinct EMR for Primary Care, a cloud-based practice management system designed for busy general practices. According to the company, the PIMS “brings together intelligent workflows, built-in Plumb’s, outpatient treatment sheets, automatic charge capture, integrated payments, connected client communication tools and business analytics to provide advanced general practice teams with a modern, cloud-based alternative to outdated, on-premise systems.”
Dermatology for Animals Expands Into Tennessee
Thrive Pet Healthcare has opened Dermatology for Animals Knoxville, the first Dermatology for Animals location in Tennessee and the 23rd nationwide. Leading the practice is Dr. Danielle Nolitt, a University of Tennessee graduate, who completed a dermatology internship at Cornell University and a dermatology residency at the University of Tennessee.
