Jaguar’s CID Drug Receives Extended Approval
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration renewed its conditional approval of Jaguar Animal Health’s Canalevia-CA1, a treatment for chemotherapy-induced diarrhea (CID) in dogs. “This extension was granted because we were able to demonstrate that the company is making active progress toward proving substantial evidence of effectiveness of Canalevia-CA1 for treatment of CID in dogs,” said Dr. Michael Guy, Jaguar’s vice president of preclinical and nonclinical studies. “As announced, the company is planning a clinical field study … to support full approval of the product.” Canalevia-CA1 (crofelemer delayed-release tablets) initially received conditional approval in December 2021.
Animal Dermatology Group Adds 2 Practices
Animal Dermatology Group acquired two specialty practices: Animal Dermatology and Allergy in Rocklin, California, and SkinVet Clinic in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Terms were not disclosed. “The transaction underscores ADG’s commitment to continue its planned expansion in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest,” the company reported.
Thrive Rebrands Miami Hospital
Southeast Veterinary Referral Center will be open around the clock starting Dec. 11 as part of a rebrand that also will see a new name: Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialists Miami. The South Florida practice joined the Thrive Pet Healthcare network in 2021. In other news, Thrive-affiliated Heart of Texas Veterinary Specialty and 24-Hour Emergency Center in Round Rock, Texas, became the first combination emergency and specialty hospital to attain Fear Free Veterinary Practice Certification.
Cornell Professor Joins Invoxia Board
Invoxia, the French company behind the biometric Smart Dog Collar, appointed veterinary cardiologist Dr. N. Sydney Moïse to its scientific advisory board. Dr. Moïse is the CV Starr Professor Emerita of Cardiology at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.
New England Practice Begins Expansion
Advanced Veterinary Specialty Center of New England broke ground on a 17,700-square-foot expansion that will more than double the size of the Walpole, Massachusetts, hospital. The project, overseen by Acella Construction Corp., includes exam, X-ray, MRI and CT rooms, a full lobby, a waiting area, offices and restrooms.

Trocaire College, a private, Catholic institution in Buffalo, New York, introduced an online veterinary assistant program. Applications for classes starting Feb. 12, 2024, are available at bit.ly/481vzzR. The program includes 100 hours of hands-on clinical training at a veterinary facility of the student’s choosing.
Scribes Make a Difference at VEG Hospitals
Veterinary Emergency Group now employs 100 scribes. “VEG doctors with a scribe by their side are reducing their documentation time spent after each shift by 87%, from four hours to 30 minutes,” the company reported. “This results in a better life balance for VEG doctors and helps to elevate their morale, which creates a positive domino effect throughout the hospitals.”
New: Veterinarians Without Borders USA
Veterinarians Without Borders, a Canadian nonprofit group, expanded into the United States with the establishment of Veterinarians Without Borders USA. “Together, these two charities are rebranding as Veterinarians Without Borders North America,” the parent organization stated. “VWB North America works in more than a dozen countries and serves more than 1.5 million people and animals annually through a range of programming including emergency response efforts, establishing animal health systems and empowering marginalized populations.”
Study: Cat Friendly Practices Are Busier
Veterinary hospitals certified as a Cat Friendly Practice perform more diagnostic tests more frequently, according to a study published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery. “The analysis found that CFPs performed diagnostic testing at 12% more clinical visits as well as bloodwork at approximately 10% more total clinical visits and 9% more wellness visits,” the American Association of Feline Practitioners noted. “Additionally, the average revenue of a practice visit at CFPs was 17% higher than non-CFPs.”
Covetrus Offers Calibra Veterinary Diets Snacks
The Covetrus-owned brand Calibra launched Veterinary Diets Snacks, a line of treats formulated for “dogs on a veterinary diet who also have a variety of medical conditions,” the company stated. The therapeutic treats are available at veterinary practices and stores in the European Union and Latin America.
