Midwest Veterinary Supply to Acquire Victor Medical
Midwest Veterinary Supply has agreed to purchase Victor Medical Company, a distributor of veterinary products in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. Terms were not disclosed. “By acquiring Victor Medical, Midwest Veterinary Supply will be able to immediately offer their customers a larger portfolio of products and services they can access to better serve their patients,” Minnesota-based Midwest reported.
Zoetis to Launch Vetscan OptiCell
Zoetis Inc. will accept U.S. preorders for the new Vetscan OptiCell beginning in late 2024. The cartridge-based, AI-powered hematology tool provides advanced complete blood count analysis, according to Zoetis. “For the first time, we are able to use advanced AI image-recognition technology to characterize the blood cells instead of relying on their size or other physical parameters,” said Dr. Richard Goldstein, the company’s global chief medical officer.

Nestlé Purina Sponsors Free Urinary Stone Analysis
Nestlé Purina PetCare has awarded a five-year, $1 million grant to support the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine’s G.V. Ling Urinary Stone Analysis Laboratory. The lab will accept up to 800 stones a year for a free analysis. “By utilizing data submitted and analyzed by the USAL, researchers hope to gain a better understanding of urolithiasis management and abnormal tissue mineralization,” Purina stated.

Coming Soon: First Arista Referral Practice
Arista Advanced Pet Care, part of Affinity Veterinary Partners, plans to open its first hospital, a referral and emergency practice, in Atlanta in the first quarter of 2025. Affinity also owns CityVet, which recently launched its 47th shared-ownership practice in Westminster, Colorado.
Petco Rabbits Are Adoption-Only
Petco has announced a recommitment to an adoption-only policy for rabbits. The notice followed the completion of a limited pilot involving the sale of fewer than 50 rabbits in select locations. According to Petco, “The decision was made in line with the company’s longstanding Think Adoption First philosophy, which encourages prospective pet parents to consider adopting a homeless pet rather than purchasing one, whenever possible, and feedback received in partnership with animal rescue and welfare organizations nationwide.”
Wedgewood Offers Molnupiravir to Treat FIP
Wedgewood Pharmacy has added molnupiravir to its formulary as a first- and second-line therapy for feline infectious peritonitis. “Wedgewood will be the first U.S. veterinary compounding pharmacy to offer feline-friendly formulations of molnupiravir in a variety of doses designed to combat the different forms of FIP,” the company reported.
