FDA Authorizes First CHF-Delaying Drug for Dogs
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first drug shown to delay the onset of congestive heart failure in dogs with Stage B2 preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease. The approval of Boehringer Ingelheim’s Vetmedin Chewable Tablets and Vetmedin Solution expands upon a 2022 FDA conditional approval. The company said Vetmedin is the “only medication approved to treat preclinical heart disease in dogs and extend their symptom-free life.”
Animalytix to Launch VetGetRx Marketplace
Animalytix is preparing to introduce VetGetRx.com, a marketplace services platform for veterinarians. The offering aims to streamline access to products and services while offering data-driven insights to support purchasing decisions. When launched later this year, the platform will offer veterinary, human-labeled, and compounded pharmaceuticals along with vaccines, nutraceuticals, medical supplies, and pet nutrition products from a variety of participating distributors and manufacturers.
Oral Bordetella Vaccine Receives USDA Approval
Elanco Animal Health has earned USDA approval of TruCan Ultra B (Oral), the first USDA-licensed 0.5 mL oral Bordetella bronchiseptica vaccine. The vaccine is designed to simplify administration while supporting respiratory disease prevention in dogs. Elanco said the oral format may improve compliance and efficiency in clinical and shelter settings and provide an effective, low-stress experience for dogs.
Progressive Launches New Pet Insurance Product
Progressive Insurance has introduced a new pet health insurance offering for the owners of cats and dogs. The product will be underwritten directly by Progressive and its affiliated underwriting companies and administered by Companion Protect. Offered alongside the company’s long-standing pet insurance program administered by Pets Best, the new plans cost an average of $47 per month and include customizable and flexible coverage, reimbursement, and deductible options.
