A 9-year-old Maltipoo named Lexi pushed pet health insurer Trupanion past $3 billion in paid claims when her Coral Springs, Florida, owners were reimbursed for allergy medication, according to the company.
“To cross $3 billion in paid claims is a huge acknowledgment of the problem we are solving and underscores the growing importance of pet medical insurance,” said Trupanion’s CEO and president, Margi Tooth.
Trupanion has processed more than 11.1 million veterinary invoices since its founding in 2000. This data from more than 2.4 million insured pets has provided insight into the major health issues affecting dogs and cats.
Common canine claims and their value include:
- Allergy and allergy-related issues: $128.47 million
- Diarrhea: $66.74 million
- Limping: $78.59 million
- Vomiting: $80.46 million
- Mass lesion: $103.60 million
Common feline claims and their value include:
- Renal failure: $9.62 million
- Vomiting: $18.40 million
- Diarrhea: $6.13 million
- Diabetes: $5.82 million
- Hyperthyroidism: $3.46 million
According to Trupanion, the average claim is $444.67. The highest paid claims were $152,956 for a dog and $53,593 for a cat.
Trupanion’s daily average of paid claims is $1.5 million. Other relevant figures include:
- 165,744 claims paid per month, totalling $48.63 million
- 37,426 claims paid per week, totaling $10.98 million
- 22 claims paid per hour, totaling $57,770
- Four claims paid per minute, totaling $1,088
