Today’s Veterinary Business Staff

The professional grooming credential, which serves as proof of a pet groomer’s knowledge and technical skills, is now managed by the American Kennel Club. Terms of the transaction between the AKC and the World Pet Association were not released.
“Integrating the PGC within the already robust AKC grooming certifications will continue to strengthen the grooming industry,” said Dennis Sprung, the AKC’s president and CEO. “This will ensure the credential is available to workforce development programs and community colleges around the country.”
The professional grooming credential’s Standards of Practice and Knowledge were developed by veterinarians, pet industry professionals and groomers from all disciplines and experience levels.
The program assesses groomers in areas such as bathing, drying, finish grooming, client consultations and communication, and facility and personnel management.
Pet groomers with six months of experience in the previous 18 months or 25 educational hours within the past five years are eligible to apply for the credential.
Groomers must complete 25 hours of continuing education to maintain their credential.
The World Pet Association started the program in 2000. The organization’s president, Vic Mason, said the WPA is “continually reinvesting in the pet and service industry.”
“The idea that we can offer groomers a way to define their business and reinforce their expertise with their clients was a valuable path for us,” Mason said.
