Felanorm, the first generic methimazole oral solution to treat feline hyperthyroidism, has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval.
The Norbrook Laboratories prescription medication contains the same active ingredient as Felimazole Coated Tablets, a Dechra Veterinary Products drug first approved in 2009.
Felanorm contains 5 milligrams of methimazole per 1 milliliter of solution.
Norbrook Laboratories conducted an in vivo blood-level study of 32 healthy fasted cats to determine whether 5 milligrams of the oral solution is bioequivalent to 5-milligram Felimazole Coated Tablets. Each cat randomly received one of the drugs.
The study concluded that the generic oral solution was bioequivalent. No serious adverse effects were reported.
Felanorm is available in 30- and 100-milliliter bottles and has a starting dose of 2.5 milligrams every 12 hours.
According to the product label, pregnant women, women who might become pregnant and nursing mothers should wear gloves when handling the solution or a treated cat’s litter or bodily fluids.
