According to Elanco Animal Health’s newly released America’s Itchy Dogs report, nearly 90% of U.S. dogs experience itching at some point during the year, and their owners want quick relief.
Nearly 8 in 10 owners said they would seek treatment elsewhere if their current veterinarian cannot treat the itch. Most who switched did so after three or fewer visits.
“These findings highlight the critical need for veterinarians to be an ally in the fight against itch and to deliver effective results by the second visit,” said Dr. Joya Griffin, a veterinarian and board-certified dermatologist at Animal Dermatology Clinic in Louisville, Kentucky.
Nearly two-thirds of itchy dogs experience worsening symptoms during allergy season. On average, dog owners add two additional treatments and spend $173 more during periods of peak pollen levels.
Itching in dogs is a frustration on both sides of the exam table. Sixty percent of owners reported feelings of frustration and helplessness about their dog’s itching, while 90% of veterinarians reported the condition is the most frustrating issue they deal with.
“Canine atopic dermatitis doesn’t just affect dogs; it can take a significant emotional toll on pet parents as well,” said Dr. Tom Lewis, a veterinary dermatologist and the founder of Dermatology for Animals. “Many of my clients have spent thousands of dollars on treatment options to control their dog’s itch.”
According to the report, owners don’t seek treatment until the itch symptoms are present for six weeks. Most veterinarians say pet owners don’t realize the level of discomfort their dogs are in and wait too long to visit.
Overall, pet owners expressed wanting to help their itchy dogs. Sixty percent would travel outside their state to see a specialist if their dogs’ itching could be cured.
Successfully treating itchy dogs can strengthen the veterinarian-client relationship. More than 80% of veterinarians said owners of successfully treated dogs are more likely to visit their office for other issues, and 70% said owners referred other clients to their practice.
