Today’s Veterinary Business Staff

A new CATalyst Council report sheds light on how cat owners feel about their veterinarian and other feline topics.
The report, State of the Cat: Wellness and Nutrition 2024, is based on data collected from more than 400 U.S. veterinarians and 1,900 cat owners.
“The CATalyst Council worked with industry experts over the course of a year to gather robust data and develop key insights that can be immediately applied to strategic business decisions,” said Gina Fortunato, the CATalyst Council’s president. “I am positive it will benefit animal health companies, shelter and adoption organizations and the veterinary community while helping to increase needed care to companion cats across the country.”
The report examines:
- What cat owners think about their veterinarian.
- The differences and similarities between dog and cat owners.
- The top three unmet needs in feline medical care, according to owners and veterinarians.
- New products that might help improve feline patient care.
- Nutritional recommendations.
- The top three issues veterinarians have with feline patients.
Key takeaways from the data include:
- 35% of cat owners had little or no prior experience.
- More than 70% of cats had a veterinary exam during the first year of ownership, but less than 33% visited over the next three or more years.
- 30% of cat owners said their veterinarian told them about making pet transport less stressful.
The report is available in management insights and analyst versions. Each may be purchased at catalystreport.org.
