Former AAVMC Leader Joins Mars Veterinary Health
Mars Veterinary Health hired Dr. Andrew Maccabe, former CEO of the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges, as vice president of veterinary education. “In the newly created role, Dr. Maccabe will support clinical learning across Mars Veterinary Health’s 3,000 global clinics and provide strategic leadership for delivering veterinary education, educational outcomes, evidence-based medicine, and the impact on veterinary teams and care delivery within and beyond Mars,” the company reported. Among Mars’ properties are Banfield, VCA Veterinary Hospitals and Antech Diagnostics.

The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges will award two $25,000 scholarships to students who aspire to pursue an advanced degree in basic or veterinary clinical research. Georgia Student Wins $30,000 Scholarship
Max Wunsche, a third-year student at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, won a $30,000 scholarship from Simmons Educational Fund. The 2024 National Business Aptitude Award was presented during the Veterinary Business Management Association’s annual conference. “Wunsche was selected based on the exemplary case study he submitted as part of the application as well as his academic, leadership and professional accomplishments,” according to Simmons Educational Fund.
Texas Tech Schedules First-Ever White Coat Ceremony
The Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine, which opened to students in 2021, will hold its first white coat ceremony on March 17. “For the 62 pioneering students, this milestone signifies their educational progression from pre-clinical training to delivering veterinary care during their clinical rotations starting in May,” the school reported.
Emergency Hospital Opens in Alpharetta, Georgia
Alpharetta Veterinary Specialty and Emergency, a 20,580-square-foot practice, opened in Alpharetta, Georgia. Emergency care is available 24 hours a day, and specialty services are available by appointment. The medical director is Dr. Michael F. Di Cicco.
12 Institutions Become AAVMC Members
The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges welcomed 12 new members. The Universidad de Ana G. Mendez in Puerto Rico, which has a Letter of Reasonable Assurance from the Council on Education, is an AAVMC member institution. Named provisional members were Arkansas State University, Chamberlain University, Clemson University, Hanover College, Lincoln Memorial University-Orange Park in Florida, Lyon College, Rocky Vista University, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona in Spain, the University of Nicosia in Cyprus, and Utah State University. In addition, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University in Karachi, Pakistan, is a collaborative member.
Oklahoma VMA Chooses Veterinarian of the Year
India-born Dr. Deepan Kishore was named the Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association’s Veterinarian of the Year. Dr. Kishore practices at Neel Veterinary Hospital in Oklahoma City and is an American Board of Veterinary Practitioners diplomate. He also is an ABVP founding ER fellow.
