Bonqat, a pregabalin oral solution labeled to alleviate feline fear and anxiety associated with transportation and veterinary visits, is now available to U.S. veterinary clinics. Zoetis will market and distribute the medication under an exclusive agreement with Orion Corp.
“Maintaining routine checkups is essential to cats’ overall health, yet only 40% of cats visit the veterinarian annually, compared to 82% of dogs,” said Dr. Tara Bidgood, a Zoetis vice president of veterinary professional services and medical affairs. “The stress of veterinary visits on cats and their owners can prevent cats from getting the care they need.”
Bonqat is administered about 90 minutes before a cat’s transport and is safe to give on two consecutive days, Zoetis reported. The drug reduces the presynaptic calcium influx in neurons and the subsequent release of various neurotransmitters involved in some forms of feline anxiety and fear.
According to Zoetis, 59% and 66% of cats become distressed during car travel and veterinary visits, respectively.
Feline anxiety also impacts cat owners, said Dr. Margaret Gruen, an associate professor of behavioral medicine at North Carolina State University.
“More than half of cat owners reported feeling anxious when preparing for veterinary visits and associated travel because of their cat’s stress,” Dr. Gruen said. “Removing these barriers can help cultivate a more positive and productive veterinary experience for cats and their owners.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Bonqat in November 2023.
