I am a dual-licensed certified veterinary technician in Arizona and registered veterinary technician in Oklahoma who supports Liz Hughston’s Viewpoint [“Stop Using a Non-Existent Title,” April/May 2019].
Mark Cushing’s response to her letter was condescending and did not address her issue. She is stating that in Today’s Veterinary Business we are not called by our legally appropriate title or titles. She is not addressing the term “nurse.”
Our licenses currently do not refer to us as nurses, so we should not be referred to as such in a professional publication. Please use one of our four existing titles, or the blanket “credentialed veterinary technician” until those titles have been legally changed to “registered veterinary nurse,” which is a far-off place.
Cushing is a lobbyist and legal strategist. I urge Today’s Veterinary Business to seek commentary from active, practicing leaders in our field rather than a hired lobbyist.
