A medical educator has been named editor-in-chief of The Merck Veterinary Manual, a 66-year-old animal health reference guide now in its 11th edition.
Alexandra L. Winter, BVSc, DACVS, previously served as an editor at the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. She remains on the editorial board of the journal Veterinary Surgery and is as associate editor of the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine.
Dr. Winter also is a faculty member for the Leading Innovations in Healthcare and Education course at the Harvard Macy Institute at Harvard University.
The Merck Veterinary Manual, published since 1955, is available in print and digitally. Website access is free at merckvetmanual.com.
“I will lead an ongoing conversation engaging all relevant stakeholders, including veterinarians, students, animal owners and industry professionals, to advance health and quality of life for both animals and humans,” Dr. Winter said. “The Merck Veterinary Manual, in all of its formats, will reflect these diverse perspectives.”
Her clinical experience includes a residency in equine surgery at Ohio State University, a postdoctoral fellowship in the department of anesthesiology at Cornell University, and an internship in equine surgery and anesthesiology at Kansas State University. She received her veterinary medical degree and a research degree in equine exercise physiology from the University of Sydney in Australia.
